This patent image was created by using U.S. Patent #US 59,936 Improvement in Method of Increasing Capacity of Oil Wells (Fracking Method) patented in 1866 by Edward A.L. Roberts. This very early hydraulic fracturing method works by lowering a gunpowder charge into the well and exploding it - creating seams - or fractures - in the stone. Above the charge plug is a column of water that forces itself into the cracks immediately after the explosion thereby flushing out the oil in a hydraulic fracking method.
